Our Technology

We see the future.......It has no Wires.

Xpress broadband service utilizes Fixed Broadband Wireless Access (FBWA) technology in delivering the REAL BROADBAND EXPERIENCE to the home.

In FBWA, customers are connected to the internet without the use of wires or cables to the network of the provider. A small microwave radio (also called Customer Premises Equipment) is installed at the customer's place and is homed towards the Base Station (BTS) of the provider.

ISL has covered most of Dhaka with its network of Base Stations, allowing residential market to avail of Xpress. The same network is used to provide the high-bandwidth requirements of the Small-Medium-Enterprises and Corporate customers.

At present, the Dhaka market still craves for the REAL BROADBAND EXPERIENCE that can be deployed at a large scale in an affordable package. And in this scenario, BWA is the best approach.

Xpress brings to the market the following advantages:

Fast and Easy Deployment

Because of FBWA technology, we can connect customers faster within the service coverage of Xpress. Furthermore, with the use of an extensive Business/Operations Support System (B/OSS), we are able to respond better to address changing needs of the market.

Robust High-Capacity Wireless Network

This high-capacity network was built with robustness, reliability and versatility to serve the demand for a mass-based implementation and the specialized high-bandwidth requirements of the enterprise segment.

Here in Dhaka, Bangladesh, wireless is the better solution over wired/cabled approaches:

  • Our wireless solution operates on radio frequencies that are not vulnerable to weather conditions. Performance of aerial cables/wires are adversely affected when subjected to frequent exposure to the network elements like water, heat, and also electromagnetic fields generated from powerlines, are
  • In the case of Xpress, a wireless CPE is installed at safe and secure location at the customer's location. In the case of cable providers, the cable runs from the provider's node to the customer's home, and because its exposure on the streets, posts, it can easily be subjected to unscrupulous practices like cable cutting/theft.
  • The FBWA network of Xpress was built with redundancies at different parts or segments---the local loop, backhaul and first-mile.
  • Our Network Management System allows our Network Operations Center (NOC) to monitor on a 24 by 7 basis the different network elements in real-time.

    Secure

The security of the Xpress wireless network ensures that NO COMPROMISE is made on both the identity and online transactions / activities of the subscriber. This is done through the following:

  • Strict access control and authentication measures are done, ensuring that only authorized network users are given access to the network. Customers are allowed to create their own personal profile thru an Xpress portal accessible only thru their Xpress connection.
  • Encryption method at the air interface---between the CPE and the BTS radio.
  • Only CPEs that are type-approved by ISL are used in customer deployments.
  • Xpress operates on BTRC-approved spectrum that no other access operator can use

    Scalability

Xpress wireless network has the scalability advantage. The network can be easily expanded and rolled out even in other areas where there are no wired facilities.

    Future Proof

Xpress has taken broadband internet to the next level. Not only is it designed to serve the present requirements of the market, it has also set a platform that can easily adopt new wireless technologies in the future.

    Bandwidth Management

Xpress broadband technology is backed up by years of research and development. This tried and tested wireless solution is already making waves in other emerging markets.

For some time now, broadband wireless solutions were only affordable to the Corporate/SME market. But now, we have developed an affordable residential package allowing more Bangladeshis to enjoy the benefits of a true broadband connection.

Xpress Broadband Internet is a bandwidth-managed service wherein there are means to assure equitable sharing of bandwidth. The presence of Bandwidth Managers makes Xpress Broadband Internet unique from any other broadband service in the country.

As Xpress Broadband continues to expand the service, we determined that some customers use a considerable amount of the bandwidth or "space" on our high-speed network. Some activities such as excessive file sharing, online gaming, and downloading rich media files, are starting to congest the network and degrade the service for all customers. Our bandwidth manager is placed in our network to ensure that all Xpress Broadband Internet subscribers continue to enjoy high speeds and fair access at an affordable price.

A person one the XLite188kbps package can from tome to time burst up to 188kpps, depending on traffic in the network. Though they will be averaging less than 188kbps, they can get sustained download speeds that are faster than what others are providing. For the most part, Xpress Broadband subscribers get much more than that. If you put in a network analyzer, you will see that in fact they are bursting to 188kbps even though they may only be sustaining on a continuous download 40kbps. That's just the bandwidth manager making sure that no one hogs all of the available bandwidth. But, on the same token, the bandwidth manager assures Xpress Broadband subscribers that they will be able to use the service even in the peak service hours of the day. That's a far cry from other service providers whose service drops to practically zero mbps bandwidth during the peak hours of the day, because one subscriber is hogging all of the available capacity.

Bear in mind that Xpress Broadband services do not offer dedicated speeds. With today's street prices for retail dedicated bandwidth, a subscriber will have to pay over a thousand U.S. dollars per month for dedicated 1Mbps of service (maybe even more). In other words, a guaranteed 188kbps connection will cost about US$200 per month, and that's just bandwidth! That does not include any backhaul charges, nor does it include support and equipment to actually deliver the bandwidth to the subscriber.

Because this would make the products unaffordable to most consumers, we share the bandwidth among multiple users. Our bandwidth manager software however, makes sure that the bandwidth is shared equitably and fairly among all the users of the service. We also strive to give the best possible speed experience to our customers; however, we have to balance out the desire of our customers for more speed with the cost we would have to charge for the service.
